Y5 Project 02
Shared Topography_Neighbourhood Re:creation
The Major design project situates within the forgotten neighbourhood of Mohlenpris. Located to the South East of the city centre Mohlenpris feels as an
autonomous entity within bergens city infrastructure. The neighbourhood is bounded to the south by the puddefjorde coastal inlet and cut from the main city by the New pudefjorde bridge to the North West. It lies at the heart of a diminishing industrial hinterland, with new high tech offices acquisitioning plots along the coastal edge. This current development furthermore removes the local population from a connection to; the coastal edge and to its neighbouring communities Solheim nord and Gyldenpris. Neighbourhoods who are already separated topographically by the puddefjorde. Bergen as with most cities, relies largely upon flats and apartment blocks (as those found in mohlenpris) within its core to fulfill its dwelling needs. It is the lack of continual public space that increases this existing mode of pocketed dwelling. |
Neighbourhood Re:creation seeks to bridge this rift throughout a growing social demographic, through notions of play, activity and education.
A disused Drydock in the forgotten neighbourhood of Mohlenpris, a remnant of a now fading industrial past within historic Bergen, provides the opportunity to interpret both a localised and city wide need for sport and education within the cachement of the city core. Positioned in an area with a lack of connection to sports ‘buildings’, but opportunistically concentrated around an existing football pitch, skate park and local residences, the drydock is sited in proximity to Bergen university, a new business school and local primary school. It connects the existing sports pitch to the North East and the puddefjorde to the south west with a corresponding 100m long axis. the site sits between local post modern residential apartments and the newly built Bergen business school. Acting as an 8m cut in the ground its presence is acknowledged from its direct vicinity as well as from local high level vantage points beyond the puddefjorde in Gyldenpris. |
